  • "Block-Office" as a Near-home-Office

Many of us work, at least partially, in private home offices. However, home sometimes doesn't offer a place for concentrated work. In such situations, "block offices" in residential areas could help. More in an article of Arthur Braunschweig (in German), published by öbu oder with the link below.

  • Is LCA relevant?

How pertinent is environmental life cycle assessment (LCA)? In view of the LCA discussion forum nbr. 75 in Zürich, this short article asks how we can assess whether LCA really helps to lower our environmental footprint, and how to assess if any given LCA study describes a potentially big or small impact. The first oikos New York chapter invited to the 1-hour guest lecture on "Weighting of Environmental Impacts in Ecobalance & Life Cycle Assessment", as an element of sustianably oriented management. (April 20th 2017, here the video of Arthur's lecture).

Arthur Braunschweig, Managing Partner of E2 Management Consulting AG and lecturer at Zürich's ETH, talks about the European experiences regarding weighting of environmental impacts.

Two typical situations warrant a weighting of various environmental impacts, if I want to include ecological considerations into decision making:

when I need to choose between products or services, and
when I need to allocate limited funds to projects
-> Should we rather buy cars that run on electric motors or efficient gasoline motors - considering also the electricity mix and the battery, next to everything else?
-> Should our company rather invest in a new dyeing process, or rather into improving logistics - considering that both time and funds are limited and we can't do all at once?

In this talk at oikos New York at the New School for Social Science, Arthur talks about approaches and experiences with environmental weighting methods, in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular, and he argues why such a weighting should not be done ad-hoc within a project but in a standardised way.
