E2 Management Consulting AG Project Overview

Gasser Baumaterialien AG (Gasser construction material Ltd), an important wholeseller and professional retailer in the canton Graubünden, re-organises its top management. E2-Partner Arthur Braunschweig coaches board president and the top management on their journey towards a cooperative executive board. Gasser Baumaterialien offers a large range of building materials, tools and products, with a special edge on ecological products, not least in its own ecologically outstanding head quarter and shop in Haldenstein near Chur/GR. 

Since 1996 member and project manager of the working group for the development of the VfU-Indicators Standard, since 2003 responsible for the continous development and periodical updates of the tool to calculate the VfU indicators. The tool is accepted by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for greenhouse gas reporting of an organisation. The tool, which is in German, can be ordered for free at VfU. 

At first E2 supported the launch of "Essence": This wrist watch's case consists to 1/3 of renewable material, it's band is of gum and the packaging was intelligently designed as it customers can use it as mobile phone protection.

In 2019, E2 participated at the opening event for the large photovoltaic rooftop installation of Mondaine's factory in Biberist (SO).

During 2020, we calculated Mondaine Group's eco- and climate-balance. In november, Mondaine declared their watches to be climate neutral: all climate gas emissions from materials, packagings and the group's own sites are compensated thru a great forest project in Indonesia (fairventures). At the same time, Mondaine Group published its first sustainability report. Zürich's leading newspater NZZ published a detailed article.

Energie 360° got its ISO 14001 certification in 2015, with the support of E2. We expanded the existing management system by integrating environmentally relevant aspects into existing processes, and by developing the few necessary specific environmental processes. Environmental planning was integrated into the regular annual strategy and operational planning. Environmental relevance is assessed based on the company ecobalance.

E2 has benn consulting E. Schweizer AG for more than 20 years. Instruments for the strategy implementation encompass e.g. a sustainability balanced scorecard, company ecobalance, and (award winning) sustainability reports.

• Sustainable supply chain management (2015)

From 2013 until automn 2016, E2 supported the eco-team of the KVZ Business School. The project ran in cooperation with the cantonal program "umweltschulen.ch". During the project time, the school developed and implemented projects on various levels, from the integration of ecological content into selected courses and events, to increased recycling on its premises, and into the management system of the school. Canon, 1937 in Japan gegründet, arbeitet gemäss 'Kyosei', japanisch für 'zusammen leben und arbeiten für das Gemeinwohl'. Ökologisch spielte Canon (Schweiz) AG in der Canon Gruppe eine Vorreiterrolle, gleichermassen getragen von der Konzernleitung und der Belegschaft. Das Umweltmanagement von Canon (Schweiz) AG erreichte beispielsweise, dass
-- der Treibstoffverbrauch für Servicefahrzeuge unter anderem dank Eco-Drive-Fahrkursen um 25% gesenkt wurde
-- die ersten Stand-by-Schaltungen in Faxgeräte eingebaut wurden - was zu einem weltweiten Standard wurde
-- Kunden informiert wurden, welche Recyclingpapiere auf Canon-Geräten einsetzbar sind.

Der Umweltbericht 1999/2000 von Canon, der mit Unterstützung von E2 erstellt wurde, erhielt beim ersten ÖBU-Wettbewerb für Umweltberichterstattung den 1. Preis in der Kategorie Grossunternehmen.

RUMBA aims at reducing the environmental footprint of the Swiss federal administration's work and products. In addition, RUMBA aims at cost reductions and efficiency gains, the environmental co-ordination in the administration, fostering staff motivation, and to strengthen the federal administration as environmental role model. Next to content and implementation, E2 has significantly supported RUMBA reporting, e.g. with the annual reports.

In some federal administration areas, E2 has consulted specific environmental management projects: 

- In the federal office for construction and logistics (Bundesamt für Bauten und Logistik BBL), workshops on 'Environment & Construction' for construction project managers
- at the ETH Zürich an energy policy and energy workshops for all staff.

The BAFU (Bundesamt für Umwelt) is responsible for the development and administrative implementation of the Swiss environmental policy. Ecobalance and LCA play an increasing role therein. A. Braunschweig has co-authored the impact assessment "method of ecological scarcity" (also known as 'Swiss eco-points') in 1989/90 and supported the updates in 1998, 2006 and 2013. 

In addition, E2 has critically assessed LCA studies for the BAFU.

Working groups, such as the accompanying group to the update of Swiss Ecofactors for LCA and Ecobalances, based on the "ecological scarcity method" (information in German: "MöK2020").

Starting june 2019, Arthur Braunschweig acts as president of öbu, as voluntary activity. With the Corona measures, "öbu-online" video talks have been and are taking place. Arthur Braunschweig moderated the first four events.

E2 developed a standardized and highly streamlined LCA procedure for the packaging departement of Coop Switzerland. With this simplified procedure, a simple LCA (up to three alternatives, using known materials) became possible for a cost of less than 2000 CHF per analysis.

In 2009, E2 made an environmental analysis a range of packaging, as a basis for setting priorities for future optimization.

• Develop & moderate board strategy workshops on environment and recylate use (2008)
• LCA of recycled concrete, compared to virgin material: Project design und support, in cooperation with the Hochschule Rapperswil (2008/9)
• LCA of oil shale and cement burnt with oil shale (2010)

According to an analysis of University of Lucern, the ibex fairstay is one of the four globally leading sustainability labels for the accomodation industry. Some 50 Swiss hotels and hostels carry an "ibex" label.

Next to sustainable management, the ibex enables a Hotel to receive the Swiss tourism quality label (Q, QQ, QQQ; see e.g. here) as well as the "green living" or "sustainable living" accreditation by Hotelleriesuisse.

The ibex-certification is, yet simplified, aligned with the ISO 9001 and 14001 and the SA8000 standards. It also contains sector-specific performance targets. For more than 10 years, a dedicated office manages the label. E2 continues to be on the label's certification board. 

The contributions of E2:

• Development of the hotel sustainability label (1999-2001; at first under the German label name "Steinbock")

• Integration of the EU eco-label for the accomodation industry (2006/7)
• Integration of Swiss quality label for hotels 'QQQ' (2006/7)
• Methodology update (2006, '09, '12)

The company wanted to develop effective and enterpreneurially sound, yet slim processes. E2 consulted on the composition of the project group, on possible project plans and pitfalls, and designed and lead the kick-off meeting. After that, Florin's project team independently worked out the missing EMS elements. The company got certification against ISO 14001 half y year later. 

In two subsequent projects, banks and insurance companies led by E2 developed key performance indicators for the environmental and the social performance of banks and insurance companies. The environmental KPIs ('EPI-Finance') were the first sustainability KPIs for the financial industry. The social KPIs ('SPI-Finance') were the first sector supplement of the GRI.
